First steps in Brazil: Find out how to help refugees to settle their documents

Compassiva prepared 7 tips to help refugees with their first steps in Brazil, from their national migration registry (RNM) to their bank account. Check out and share the following information:

1 – REGISTRO NACIONAL MIGRATÓRIO (RNM) (NATIONAL MIGRATION REGISTRY)

Register at Sisconare to fill in the relevant forms and book an interview appointment at the Federal Police. It is important to book an appointment as only 20 people can be seen without an appointment each day. The protocol is issued on the day of interview.

2 – CADASTRO DE PESSOA FÍSICA (CPF) (INDIVIDUAL TAXPAYER REGISTRY)

Fill the form on the Receita Federal website (The Brazilian Federal Revenue Office) to generate a protocol. Send an email to the email address below, attaching the CPF protocol, the RNM protocol, passport and a self portrait of you holding a photo ID. The response can take up to 15 days through email.

3 – SIM CARD

Go to a mobile telephone company and request a sim card. You can activate the sim card in store, to avoid future inconveniences.
Necessary documents: Photo ID, CPF and proof of address

4 – CARTÃO SUS (UNIFIED HEALTH SYSTEM CARD)

Go to the closest UBS (Primary Health Unit) and request the SUS card. The card is issued on the same day.
Necessary documents: Photo ID, phone number, CPF and proof of address

5 – BILHETE ÚNICO (TRAVEL TICKET)

Access the SPTrans website, fill the form and send a self portrait photograph. If approved, you can collect the travel ticket in any bus terminal.

6 – CARTEIRA DE TRABALHO DIGITAL (DIGITAL WORK RECORD BOOKLET)

Download the app CARTEIRA DE TRABALHO DIGITAL. Create an account with gov.br and follow the instructions. The digital work record booklet is ready straight away via the app.
Necessary documents: RNM or RNM protocol, CPF and telephone number

7 – BANK ACCOUNT

Go to a bank of your choice and request opening an account. The bank account is open immediately and the bank card can take between 15 to 20 working days to arrive. Be aware of charged bank fees.
Necessary documents: RNM or RNM protocol, CPF, telephone number, proof of address and proof of income. If you fail to provide a proof of income, the bank will proceed and make an informal contract.
