6 YEARS OF COMPASSIVA

This Friday (09/25), Compassiva completes 6 years of legal foudation. We celebrate this milestone because, since then, many doors have been opened and many projects have been able to be developed, impacting hundreds of people, both residents of the Liberdade region and refugees in São Paulo.

In 2014, after years of working on the streets of São Paulo, with volunteers and in partnership with other organizations, the institution Compassiva was founded and also Portuguese classes were also started under the LAR – Levando Ajuda ao Refugiado (LAR – Bringing Help to Refugees) project, especially for Syrian and Arab refugees. Until then, only two NGOs worked with people in refugee situations, Compassiva being the only one to start exclusively serving the Syrian and Arab public.

Two years ago, in 2016, the partnership with the UNHCR (United Nations High Commission for Refugees) began for the project for the revalidation of refugee diplomas. The result is an increase in the number of foreign diplomas revalidated in Brazil, thanks to the help of Compassiva.

To expand the service of Portuguese classes, in 2017 we won a Canadian Embassy’s public notice for the development of LAR, focusing on the Portuguese course for women.

In 2018, we expanded our service to young people in the Liberdade neighborhood through the Dojo project, a jiu-jitsu training, after Compassiva won an Australian Embassy’s public notice. The training started in 2015. This funding provided for the purchase of the mat, kimonos and hiring the Jiu-Jitsu master.

In these six years, we cannot forget all the efforts of our team of volunteers who have developed not only actions for people in need, but also built relationships with them. Thus, lives like Bruno’s (fictitious name), who found support for his development in our team, are impacted in the long term.

In 2020, given the challenge of the pandemic, some activities were adapted, others suspended, but Compassiva did not remain inert in the face of the emergency needs of those destitutes and has distributed food baskets to families in the neighborhood of Liberdade and refugees and assisted in others necessities.
