2020 came with unimaginable challenges for humanity. But, despite of that, “the human being is adaptable to any situation; we are smarter and stronger than we think; and everything is possible with good will and hard work”, says Débora Blair, coordinator LAR – Levando Ajuda ao Refugiado (LAR – Bringing Help to Refugees). And we really are!
Given the more than 180,000 stories lost to covid-19 in Brazil, thinking and acting in favor of the collective was extremely necessary. We saw that staying at home, avoiding crowds, continuing to work, study and even eat can be a privilege and those who suffer from social inequality are more at risk.
That’s why, at Compassiva, we unite our efforts to, in the midst of chaos, strengthen the lives of entire families. Want to know how we did it?
During the year, since the pandemic began, we have distributed 12,534 food baskets to families of refugees, immigrants and residents of the Liberdade region.
For people who do not live in the region where Compassiva is headquartered and needed to pick up food baskets, we made available around R$ 17,445 in transportation vouchers.
R$64,978.24 was distributed to help families with housing and household bills. In addition, R$26,700 were made available as a mobile internet aid so that 89 refugees could follow Portuguese online classes for three months.
We would like to thank our volunteers and team, who are always available, for all their efforts and support in carrying out this year’s actions. We are also grateful to our partners for their support. UNHCR, Citizenship Action, Archema, Food Bank, Brazil-Canada Chamber of Commerce, IBAB, HCOR, Pinheiros Presbyterian Church, Women of Brazil, Project 242, Tent, Unicef, YONHAP and 1212 for the donation of food baskets and other resources, in addition to Nexus, for sending messages to schedule the delivery of food baskets, and Open Taste, for the meals offered to our team and volunteers.
