GURI AT COMPASSIVA

GURI AT COMPASSIVA

The Guri at Compassiva project is a partnership between Compassiva and Santa Marcelina Social Organisation of Culture which offers free music lessons through the Guri Santa Marcelina Programme. In 2014, the Amácio Mazzaropi unit of the programme came to take place at Compassiva’s headquarters, to work with the students who had previously studied in the unit located in Brás (a neighbourhood in São Paulo) as well as to open spaces for residents of the central region of São Paulo where we are located.

In the Amácio Mazzaropi unit beginner’s music lessons are offered to children aged between 6 and 9, and follow-on lessons in singing, fingerstyle guitar, acoustic and electric guitar, violin, viola, cello, bass, electric bass, wood instruments, metal instruments and percussion for students aged 10 to 18. Beginner’s music lessons are also available to adults over 18.

Guri Santa Marcelina started in 2008 through an initiative of São Paulo’s Cultural Secretary of State and aimed to promote the musical education and socio-cultural inclusion of children and young people. It has teaching units spread around the capital and in Greater São Paulo, which house not only the music lessons, but also social assistance services.

The programme works on the development of human values in the education of children and young people who find themselves in vulnerable situations and seeks to use preventative measures such as culture and education, as well as counselling. To this effect, it relies on a team of social workers who walk alongside the students and their families through visits to the teaching units, home visits, services and referrals, talks, thematic workshops and training meetings.
