LAR (TAKING ASSISTANCE TO THE REFUGEE)
Project LAR (Taking Assistance to the Refugee) was born as an answer to the most basic and urgent needs of Syrian refugees and asylum seekers on Brazilian soil, specifically, in São Paulo. The project’s objective is to support these people and help them in their adaptation and integration into our society, providing an environment of learning and co-existence that is more than simply an escape.
Through various initiatives, project LAR has made a commitment to getting involved and finding solutions for those who are affected by conflict, attending to immigrants who are seeking shelter and offering them the hope they need to be able to rebuild their homes in a new country.
Thus, project LAR has been structured on five fronts:
The first obstacle that the Syrian refugees face upon arriving in Brazil is the language barrier. It is also the obstacle that takes the longest to overcome. Therefore, project LAR began a Portuguese course for refugees in response to this growing need for which there are few accessible alternatives for them. In the beginning, classes were taught in a small group, but over time the number of students grew and new groups have been formed for adults and children. In December 2014 the first class served by project LAR finished the basic level and entered into the intermediate level, having been able to participate in complex conversations as well as conduct job interviews.
